Healing Guatemala hosts Cataract Camps multiple times a year where 40 to 60 people regain their sight. For every $250 we raise, we can give sight to a blind person!
During the cataract camp, the Holy Spirit brings joy to those whose eyesight is restored. Doña Argentina is a perfect example. She had been blind for over 20 years because she couldn’t afford the simple cataract surgery. When she finally had the surgery, she burst into tears because the grace of the Lord overwhelmed her. We pray that she not only regained her physical eyesight but also gained spiritual insight to see the presence of the Lord in every moment of her life.
Hospital Bethesda’s Ophthalmology Clinic hosts a Cataract Camp four times a year. During these camps 40 to 60 individuals regain their sight. Most of the beneficiaries come from the poorest families and have been blind for 3-4 years, requiring the support of family members to live independently. The improvement in their well-being after the surgery is immeasurable. The moment they regain their sight, they experience the salvation of the Lord.
One reason many patients remain blind for a long time is the unaffordability of the surgery in other clinics. The standard price of cataract surgery in private eye clinics is 1000 US dollars, equivalent to three months; salary for a teacher in Guatemala. During the camp, HB requests a donation of 60 dollars for each patient to avoid creating dependency. The rest of the expenses, approximately 250 dollars, are covered by HB.
You can help bring Heaven into people’s lives with your prayerful 250 dollar offering.
Beginning February 2, members and families can “adopt” a doll figure that represents the person to whom they will give sight. The goal is to raise funds during February and on Transfiguration Sunday, March 2, celebrate God’s grace that allows us to directly be a part of Jesus’ mission to give sight to the blind.
A $250 gift can make a significant impact on someone’s life. You can give online through our GIVE page, under “Healing Guatemala,” collect cash to donate, or write a check.
Please make your check out to Union United Methodist Church and put “Give Sight” in the memo line. You can mail it to us: 7582 Woodrow St. Irmo, SC 29063, put it in the offering plate, or bring it by the church office.
